A crane being used by a tree crew toppled over Thursday onto Worcester homes and nearby powerlines.Sky5 flew over the neighborhood, on Cumberland Street, and saw the crane resting on the roof of one home and across the front of a neighboring home. A Connecticut work crew had the crane for trimming trees fully extended when it fell over and landed on the two homes. A worker was inside the bucket of the vehicle that came crashing down. The worker had to wait for close to an hour for the power in the area to be cut before he could be rescued. He was transported to an area hospital but was expected to be okay.Workers at the scene said one of the crane’s outriggers fell into a sinkhole.Video from the scene shows three of the outriggers fully extended, but the bottom one isn’t extended all the way, partially stuck in the super saturated ground.Several trees were damaged, apparently by the falling crane, and downed wires were seen entangled with the crane and tether.Several hours after the incident, crews worked to try and get the crane back upright. Crews were forced to cut the boom into pieces because it would not retract on its own. Workers at the scene called the incident a freak accident, but OSHA and state investigators will determine exactly what happened. No one was inside either of the homes at the time.
