A moped operator was seriously injured Monday in a crash involving a school bus in Lowell, Massachusetts.The crash happened at the intersection of Appleton and South streets. Lowell Public Schools officials said the moped struck the back of the bus and slid under the vehicle. The victim, who lost part of a leg in the crash, was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital where he is in critical condition. A good Samaritan at the scene tried to help the victim by using a belt for a tourniquet, witnesses said.”Everything was closed. One of my friends that were around here said that he saw the accident, and the guy unfortunately lost his leg and a lot of blood was coming out,” another witness said. “The ambulance came right away to rescue him.”Ten Cardinal O’Connell Early Learning Center students were on the bus at the time of the crash, however, no students were injured.As is protocol, the children remained on the bus while the crash was investigated by police, school officials said. The police and fire departments were on the scene to support the children. School officials do not think the students saw the crash. The students were transferred to a different bus and were brought to school with a police escort. An extra social worker will be at the school Monday to support the children, officials said.The name of the moped operator was not released.
