ISLAMABAD – British High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner has rejected speculations that the British High Commission is involved in cancelling the New Zealand cricket team visit to Pakistan.
“This was the decision of the New Zealand authorities which was taken independently,” the High Commissioner said in his tweet yesterday.
He termed the cancellation of the NZ team to Pakistan as a sad day for Pakistan and cricket fans around the world who were looking forward to the series.
Sources in the Pakistani Foreign Office also termed the decision by New Zealand as very unfortunate and said no information was shared by the New Zealand government at any level with Pakistan on the alleged “security threats” to its cricket team.
Diplomatic sources said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was host and was in touch with the Ministry of Interior for all security related issues and coordination and comprehensive security cover was given to the NZ team.
Official sources dealing with security and counter-terrorism related matters also confirmed that there was no “security threat” at all to New Zealand cricket team and nothing was shared officially with Pakistan.
