SS Rajamouli’s much awaited epic, RRR, has embarked on a record breaking start as the film has collected nearly Rs. 233 crores at the global box office. The movie has gone past the previous record holder, Baahubali 2, which had collected around Rs. 215 crores at the global box office. The common factor between the two films is the director – SS Rajamouli – who at present is the biggest brand of Indian cinema, in-fact, bigger than some of the biggest stars of the country.

The movie has grossed approximately Rs. 102 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, which is an all time record for a Telugu film. The Hindi version grossed approximately Rs. 25 crore, which is exactly on par Bollywood Hungama’s estimate of Rs. 20 crore nett. The film grossed Rs. 15 crore in Karnataka, and Rs. 10.50 crore in Tamil Nadu, which are again record numbers in the respective states for a non local film. Kerala too surprised with an opening day of Rs. 4 crore gross, which is much higher than the earlier expectation of Rs. 2.50 crore.

The biggest surprise came from the overseas belt as the film grossed Rs. 67 crore in the overseas market of which Rs. 42 crore has come from the USA. Basically, the film has emerged as the biggest opener in the history of Indian cinema and this is a record that will be difficult to break in the coming years. Barring the Hindi circuits, it’s a record opener in the respective states for a film of Telugu origin, which is a massive achievement.

The opening day figures are much higher than expected but this is just the beginning of an onslaught at the box office. The reports are positive and hence, sky is the limit for RRR at the box office in the long run. The costs are also high, which means, it’s essential for the film to gross a global total of at-least Rs. 700 crore to be in the black for all the stakeholders.
