ISLAMABAD – National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retired) Javed Iqbal said Wednesday that the Accountability Courts convicted at least 1,194 suspects during the last four years due to vigorous pleading of NAB on the basis of solid evidence. Justice (r) Javed Iqbal also said that NAB has for the first time in history brought to justice those individuals who were never question by anyone in the past.
He expressed these views while presiding over meeting to review the overall performance of the NAB.
He said that the Accountability Courts convicted 1194 corruption suspects through effective follow-up of NAB during the last four years.
He said that NAB had been utilising all its resources to bring to a logical conclusion the cases of money laundering, fake accounts, assets in excess of income, mass looting of people, fake housing / cooperative societies and mega-corruption cases of Mudaraba / Musharaka.
Out of 179 mega-corruption cases, 66 had already been brought to a logical conclusion, while 93 mega-corruption cases are still under trial in the relevant accountability cases.
He said that corruption is the root cause of all problems which not only affects the socio-economic development of the society but also the countries of the world.
NAB is focal organisation of Pakistan under United National Convention against Corruption (UNCAC).NAB is pursuing “Accountability for All” policy aiming to purge the country from the menace of corruption.
NAB is chairman of SAARC Anti Corruption Forum. Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China to oversee (CPEC) China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.
NAB has introduced a Combine Investigation Team (CIT) system to improve the quality of inquiry and investigation based on solid evidence and to benefit from the collective wisdom of senior supervisory officers. NAB has set up a state-of-the-art scientific laboratory with digital forensics, questionnaires and fingerprint analysis facilities. The performance of NAB has improved significantly due to effective measures taken.NAB has developed a monitoring and evaluation and standardized quantitative system to further improve its performance.
In the context of the Enforcement Strategy, the NAB has devised time frame for the investigation and filing of Corruption References on allegations of corruption. NAB has also established witness handling cells in all the regions to improve the standard and quality of investigations as per law. The NAB pursues its cases in the relevant courts on the basis of solid evidence as per law.
The conviction rate in NAB cases is 66.8%. NAB Chairman has directed all NAB officers to redouble their efforts to make the country corruption free.
He said that eradication of corruption is our national duty for which all the officers of NAB were making efforts through commitment, merit, hard work and transparency.
He said the World Economic Forum, the Transparency International, Global Peace, PILDAT and Mishal Pakistan have lauded NAB’s efforts to create awareness among people about the ill effects of corruption and for establishing a corruption free Pakistan.
According to the results of a survey conducted by Gallup & Gilani Pakistan, 59 percent Pakistanis expressed their satisfaction over the NAB’s performance.
