ISLAMABAD – Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser yesterday made an attempt to involve opposition leader in the National Assembly Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to play his role for reviving consultation process through committee on legislative business.
He desired this through writing a letter to the opposition leader. Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser has recently been given a task by Prime Minister Imran Khan to engage opposition in talks on electoral reforms and other important matters. In this regard, the other day [Thursday] Asad Qaiser held a detailed meeting with senior members of the steering committee to initiate discussion on controversial legislation and other matters.
The speaker, in his letter to the opposition leader, said that a committee on legislative business was constituted with consensus between the government and the opposition on various bills. Electoral reforms bill and some other bills have been approved by NA but these still need green signal from Senate, the letter read.
The speaker said that a consultation process had not been completed by the committee on legislative business. He proposed that both the treasury and opposition members should proceed for inclusive decision making and building up consensus above party politics on all mega reforms of common interest in the wider national interest.
Speaker Asad Qaiser reiterated the need to utilise this forum to restart consultative process on these bills in the larger public interest. He also desired an active role of the Opposition to make this process meaningful. He also assured that his office would facilitate the government and the opposition in creating a consensus on these bills.
“The government has decided to present the bill in joint session of the Parliament for which, we want parliamentary committee to meet again and discuss the bill, the speaker stated,” reads letter.
Asad Qaiser urged the opposition to develop consensus over the bill by keeping aside political differences. He further assured that speaker office was ready to cooperate with government and opposition.
