ISLAMABAD – Lack of required quorum in the National Assembly has taken a chronic form, as PTI’s government for the fifth consecutive day on Friday failed to run the proceedings due to thin presence of MNAs.
The National Assembly, which is one day away from witnessing the double hat-trick of quorum syndrome, has been unable to dispose of agenda [Order of the Day] for even one day in the first five days of fourth parliamentary year.
The opposition has been taking full advantage of lack of quorum in the House and enjoying the rules related to quorum disrupting the proceedings.
On Friday with onset of the proceedings, PML-N’s backbencher Khel Das rushed to point out lack of quorum in the House just after the national anthem. The chair without counting and sensing lack of required strength abruptly adjourned the proceedings till Monday.
The front rows of the House from both sides of the aisle were almost empty. Probably due to the weekend, most of the MPs from far-flung areas had left for their constituencies. Political and constitutional experts viewed that the quorum was largely considered to be responsibility of treasury benches. The opposition side is equally responsible for it. About misuse of clause related to pointing quorum, they said that opposition often misuses this clause only to disrupt proceedings of the House.
PTI’s MNAs, in the previous government era, also used to misuse this clause by pointing out quorum without any reason, now this government is facing the same issue.
