Lahore – A British court on Monday acquitted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif and his family in money laundering allegations. The UK court ordered unfreezing of Shehbaz Sharif and his family’s bank accounts for lack of evidence of corruption and money laundering.
It should be noted that the bank accounts of Shehbaz Sharif and Suleman Shehbaz were frozen in December 2019 on a court order. Shehbaz and Suleman’s bank accounts were subject to a high-level investigation. The accounts were frozen following a request from Pakistan to the British government to recover the looted money.
Shehbaz Sharif and Salman Shehbaz were acquitted in money laundering case in UK.
The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) unfroze the bank accounts of former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Suleman Sharif on Monday.
The NCA had conducted a 17-month long probe in which it examined Shehbaz Sharif’s financial transactions over the past 20 years. In it, no evidence of money laundering or criminal activities against the PML-N president or his family were found.
The NCA submitted the investigation report of the bank accounts at the Westminster court in which it said that Shehbaz and his son were not involved in money laundering practices in Pakistan, Dubai and the UK.
The NCA had requested the UK court for an extension when it first began probing the case, stating that it needed more time to complete the probe against Shehbaz in multiple countries.
The agency then wrote a letter to Shehbaz Sharif, calling upon the PML-N leader to share details of his accounts with them otherwise, they would legally scrutinise the accounts by obtaining a production order.
The NCA had initiated a probe against Shehbaz Sharif and his family after the ARU had shared evidence with the UK crime agency.
Shehbaz and Suleman’s bank accounts were frozen in December 2019 by the NCA following a UK court order.
Meanwhile, PML-N President and National Assembly Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif in a tweet on Monday said, “I bow my head before Allah in all humility & with feelings of profound gratitude. Today’s decision by UK court is not just my or Nawaz Sharif’s vindication but that of Pakistan too. Certainly truth has greater power than all the lies, fabricated stories & character assassination.
Separately, Shehbaz Sharif said as per recent polls people believe that only PML-N can get Pakistan out of the crisis the PTI government had created.
Shehbaz arrived at the house of Malik Abrar, the party’s central leader where he was accorded a warm welcome. He paid homage to party functionaries and workers saying they had turned the tide with their unity, steadfastness and hard work.
He said the people of Pakistan had clearly expressed their will through recent Cantonment elections showing their support and trust in PML-N. He said God willing, the time had come for PML-N to save the dear people of Pakistan from sufferings under the cruel and disastrous rule of Imran Khan. He said if Allah Almighty gave PML-N a chance, he will change the destiny of the people.
