Derwin James and the Los Angeles Chargers have agreed on a four-year, $76.4 million extension that makes him the highest-paid safety in NFL history, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The deal has an average annual value of $19.133 million, the source told Schefter, and will reset the safety market.
James, 26, had been in a “hold-in” status at Chargers training camp, where he has been in attendance but not participating in practices.
The 17th overall draft pick in 2018, James was entering the fifth and final season of his rookie contract and was scheduled to make $9 million. He played only five games in 2019 because of a foot injury and missed the entire 2020 season because of a knee injury.
