A man being held at the Raymond Detention Center has died after he was assaulted by other detainees, authorities said.Michael Richardson was found unresponsive in POD A of the detention center at about 2 p.m. Monday, interim Hinds County Sheriff Marshand Crisler said in a news release.”It is our belief that as a result of the assault, detainee Richardson appears to display a medical episode. This was based solely on our preliminary assessment,” Crisler said.Crisler said most of the time, detainees in POD A are in general population, which means they have access to one another. He said Richardson was assaulted by two other detainees, whose names have not been released.”Everyone involved has a violent offender background,” Crisler said. Richardson was being held at the detention center on a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, Crisler said. The incident was reported to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, as is the policy, Crisler said. The interim sheriff said his department is conducting a separate administrative investigation to determine if any detention officers violated policies. Crisler said his administration is working with the Hinds County Board of Supervisors to bring the jail into compliance, making it more secure and safe for detainees.Jail Administrator Maj. Kathryn Bryan joined Crisler in offering condolences to Richardson’s family.”In the few short months the sheriff and I have been here, we have taken extraordinary efforts to address the years, the decades of neglect and apathy for this jail, and I am confident moving into the future, the sheriff and I will be able to make some success,” Bryan said. Crisler said Richardson’s family was notified Monday night.
