A Vermont man was killed Tuesday when his pickup truck drifted off an I-93 bridge over the Connecticut River in Littleton and plunged into the water below.Police said the Dodge Ram truck was traveling north on I-93 along the border with Vermont when it drifted off the road and struck a tree. It then traveled down an embankment into the river.New Hampshire State Police said the driver of the truck, Joshua Casey, 44, of Concord, Vermont, was pronounced dead at the scene.New Hampshire Fish and Game crews and divers were at the scene throughout the day. Crews were able to haul the truck out of the river by about 2:30 p.m.Littleton fire Chief Michael McQuillen said the crews worked in dangerous conditions in cold water with little visibility. “The initial crews that went out there, they did make some valiant efforts to try to swim down to get to the vehicle, to get the victim out of the vehicle but they weren’t able to where it was located,” McQuillen said.Multiple agencies from both New Hampshire and Vermont responded, including divers. McQuillen said his crews are not certified in diving and showed true heroism. “I want to give credit to the ones that were in the water that actually risked their lives to try to get down to make a recovery in a rescue attempt. It was not successful, that doesn’t mean they didn’t do everything they could to make it,” McQuillen said. “They put their lives at risk to do it, it wasn’t the outcome we wanted.”One lane of I-93 was closed, and drivers were asked to avoid the area. The lane was back open by the late afternoon.Officials said they don’t yet know how the truck drifted.The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
