Islamabad – The opposition on the first day of fourth parliamentary year successfully disrupted proceedings of National Assembly by taking advantage of lack of required quorum in the House.
With the outset of proceedings, the opposition opted to point out lack of required strength (86 MNAs) to run the proceedings. They only waited for passing the resolution to pay tribute to Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Geelani.
The opposition members raised concerns over calling the session of National Assembly on a short notice. They also expressed reservations over locking the press gallery for journalists on the day of joint session of the Paarliament.
PPP-P senior MNA Naveed Qamar, taking the floor, asked reasons for locking the press gallery for journalists on the day of joint session. He said the government should not call national assembly session on a short notice.
PML-N’s Khawaja Saad Rafique said that lawmakers should be informed at least three days before calling the session of the national assembly.
PPPP’s Agha Rafi Ullah said that government had no required strength to run the house. “I pointed out lack of quorum in the House,” he said. The chair suspended proceedings of the House till managing required strength and later adjourned the proceedings due to lack of quorum.
The house witnessed thin presence with the start of the proceedings. The first two benches from both sides of the aisle were almost empty in Friday’s session.
