Louisville mother pregnant with conjoined twins: ‘I know they’re fighters’
Charla Cook and her husband are holding out hope their twin daughters survive birth and will be strong enough to have a surgery to separate them.
In her third trimester, pregnant with twins that most doctors have said won’t survive, Charla Cook does what every mother would: She clings to hope.”I honestly pray for God just to perform some type of miracle,” Cook told WLKY.The probability her daughters would survive was so low, she was given the chance to end her pregnancy, but refused. Already a mom to three, Cook said she and hre husband had wanted, planned and prayed for another pregnancy.”We were very excited to welcome our fourth and final baby. But then to hear this news, it was devastating,” Cook admitted. But it wasn’t until halfway through the pregnancy that she and her husband realized they were expecting twins. At a routine doctors appointment at 21 weeks along, Cook noticed what appeared to be two heads on the ultrasound. The tech confirmed it and then left the room, returning with a doctor. “She came back in and she continued to scan a little bit and then she told me she thought they were connected,” she remembered. The twins, as it turned out, share a heart wall, but each have their own hearts. However, there are several shared organs including a liver, which makes it nearly impossible to separate them. Most doctors said it could not be done, but one team in Florida is willing to try.”That’s the only hospital that has told us that. So after we heard that news, we had hope for something after hearing so many negative things from so many places and professionals,” Cook said. The journey so far, she said, has been overwhelming, but she remains hopeful for a miracle.”The girls have survived so far, so I know they’re fighters,” Cook said.A fundraising page has been set up to help the family with travel and medical expenses.
