The Mani Ratnam-directed Ponniyin Selvan 1 is on a historic run in Tamil Nadu as the film has clocked Rs. 150 crores in 9 days in the state. The period epic starring Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has become the third film after Baahubali 2 and Vikram in the history of Tamil Nadu to clock Rs. 150 crore in the state.

Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 1 creates history; defeats Baahubali 2 and targets Vikram in Tamil Nadu to emerge ALL-TIME HIGHEST GROSSER

On its 9th day, PS 1 has surpassed the lifetime collections of Baahubali 2 (Rs. 155 crores) in Tamil Nadu and there is a strong possibility for it to topple the present record grosser, Vikram on Sunday i.e. its 10th day. It took 5 years for Vikram to dethrone Baahubali 2 from the top spot at the Tamil Nadu box office, and PS 1 has managed to topple Vikram in a span of merely 3 months.

The way it’s trending, PS 1 might become the first ever Tamil Film to do Rs. 200 crores or more in Tamil Nadu, which will be a record that can be challenged by PS 2 next year. Rarely does an industry deliver two record grossers in the same year, and it has happened in Tamil Nadu film industry with PS 1 and Vikram in a span of 3 months.

The top spot at present is held by Vikram with a TN Gross of Rs. 172 crores, and it’s a matter of a day or two before the Kamal Haasan film slips to the second spot. The 9 day total of PS 1 in TN stands at approximately Rs. 156 crores.
