The Mani Ratnam directorial Ponniyin Selvan-1 which was released a week back opened to a thunderous response from the audience in the South. However, the Hindi version of the film opened to a tepid start. Said to be a film of epic proportions, PS-1 which garnered rave reviews saw its business pick up over its opening weekend.

In this box office report, we look at the box office collections of Ponniyin Selvan-1 at the close of its first week in theatres. As expected, after a slow start the business of the film saw good growth on its second and third day running with Rs. 2.50 cr. and Rs. 3.25 cr. coming in respectively. However, on its first Monday the business of PS-1 saw a drop of nearly 56% to Rs. 1.40 cr. from its third day collections. Following this though, with Navratri and Dussehra festivities in full swing the business of the film saw growth with Rs. 1.60 cr. and Rs. 2.55 cr. coming in on its fifth and sixth day running. By the close of its first week in theatres, Ponniyin Selvan-1 has managed to collect Rs. 14.25 cr.

As of now, Ponniyin Selvan-1 continues to run in theatres and is expected to see yet another growth spurt in collections over its second weekend. As per trade predictions, the business of the film could even cross the Rs. 20 cr. mark by the end of its second weekend running.
