Akshay Kumar has returned to the box office with the mega budget historical, Samrat Prithviraj. However, the film has taken a poor start at the box office. According to the data received by Bollywood Hungama, Samrat Prithviraj has opened in the same range as Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi. The first day collections of Samrat Prithviraj are in the range of Rs. 10.50 to 11.50 crores.

The opening day collections are lower than Akshay Kumar’s previous release, Bachchan Paandey, which had opened in the Rs. 13 crore range. For a film made on a budget as high as Prithviraj, the opening should have been above Rs. 16 crores, and this is certainly a case of underperformance on day one. The biz would have been even lower if not for the tax free status in certain states across India.

The movie has gone past the double digit mark primarily due to the push in tier 2 and tier 3 cities as the occupancy in the tier 1 markets were low. In-fact, the film was around 30 to 40 percent lower than Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 in the metros The final collections might be marginally higher since it is difficult to get the exact collections from non digital centres, a place where Samrat Prithviraj is recording good collections.

As trends indicate, the film will likely see a massive jump in the collections on Saturday and Sunday. If those big jumps come on the weekend, the movie might just record a healthy trend at the box office, as the target audience is yet to step out for the film.

The collections on day one were dominated by mature audience since the youth has stayed away as of now. If that segment of audience comes on board Prithviraj, it might put up some respectable numbers in longer run. The Akshay Kumar starrer needs to pass a new exam every single day of the opening week starting Monday.
