BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — The Burlington City Council has voted to use nearly $3 million in federal pandemic relief funding to address homelessness in the city.
The funding will go toward creating a new emergency shelter and a position in city government to help end homelessness as well as other initiatives, mychamplainvalley.com reported. The city council voted in favor of the plan on Monday.
“We are really working hard on a sustained, ongoing basis to help the most vulnerable members of our community and systematically ending homelessness,” Mayor Miro Weinberger said.
The funding will also help to establish a downtown community resource center, the news station reported.
“We can make an impact where it most matters in terms of addressing homelessness, not just managing it, not just dealing with it but really trying to end homelessness,” said Brian Pine, director of the Community and Economic Development Office. “It’s something as a community I think we should all share as a goal.”
