Deputies are investigating after an elderly woman in Davenport told them her adult son was trying to smother her in her sleep.After the woman called 911, they responded to the scene at around 3 p.m. Sunday.She told deputies she woke up to the suspect, 47-year-old Arthur Martin, shoving a pillow in her face as she was napping on the couch. She managed to escape and call for help, deputies say. Martin barricaded himself in an upstairs bathroom but refused to come out, police said.The deputies entered the bathroom and Martin instantly charged at them with a large knife, stabbing one deputy on the top of his head, according to Polk deputies.The deputy tased Martin, but police said it didn’t work. He kept on fighting with the deputies while wielding his knife, so deputies said they had to shoot him. Martin died and no other deputies were hurt.The deputy who was stabbed in the head was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.”Here is one more example of how dangerous this job is. When deputies respond to family disturbances, they do everything they can to resolve the situation.
