Mani Ratnam’s historic epic, Ponniyin Selvan 1 with Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Trisha is creating new records at the box office with each passing day. On Monday, it entered the Rs. 175 crore club in Tamil Nadu and emerged the highest-grossing film of all time in the state. The film has gone past the Tamil Nadu collections of Kamal Haasan’s gangster thriller, Vikram, which had collected Rs. 172 crores with a release earlier this year in June.

PS 1 is now striding closer to the Rs. 200 crore club in the state and if it manages to attain the number, it would be the first ever Tamil film to clock the Rs. 200 crore mark in the state. The film is standing tall at the global box office too with a worldwide gross of approximately Rs. 375 crores plus, it will soon zoom into the Rs. 400 crore club. By doing so, PS 1 would become just the third Tamil film after 2.0 and Vikram to earn Rs. 400 crore or more at the global box office.

While 2.0 stands at the number one spot with a global collection of Rs. 600 crore plus, Vikram has occupied the 2nd spot with Rs. 435 crore gross. Seeing an all-time grosser in an industry is a rare phenomenon, but the Tamil film fraternity has seen two all-time grossers in a span of 3 months. It took 5 years for Vikram to break the record of Baahubali 2 and it was a matter of mere 5 months for PS 1 to topple Vikram at the box office.

In 2023, the industry is hyped to see another all-time record in the state with the release of PS 2 in summer.
